About Art
Born in Youngstown, Ohio and raised in Richmond, Virginia Art Burton has held a number of professional positions in community and environmental development throughout Richmond. As Founder of Kinfolk Community Empowerment Center, Art directed a multi-dimensional outreach program created to inspire and build possibilities, opportunities, and resources for Richmond’s public housing community,
His father came to Richmond as an activist in 1970 in effort to get the first majority black council, Curtis Holt, who worked in housing and economic development. He continues the fight for the black community through the influence of his father and all the men around him. Through his nonprofit organization, Art takes a holistic, grassroots approach to community action in historically disadvantaged neighborhoods around Richmond, and believes in the power of organizing and empowering the members of black, low-income marginalized communities to do the work of enacting changes they would like to see to improve health, quality of life, and financial well-being.”
